About this Shrine

Ancient Izumo Shrine, located on the coast of Japan's northern island, is said to be built on a sacred site where the sea goddess Otohime once visited her father's court in order to persuade him to allow her and her 1000 suitors to find a place to settle. Today, the shrine honors the kami Izumo Takamori, who is often depicted with three faces: a wise elder face on his chest, a fierce warrior face on his back, and a strong ruler face on his forehead.

Izumo Shrine is known for its association with the legend of Izumo Takamori and his three faces, as well as its connections to the coastal regions of Miyagi Prefecture. The shrine also hosts an annual festival in May to celebrate the arrival of spring.
