About this Shrine

Located in the city of Sendai, Aoi-dan Shrine is dedicated to the deities of love and fertility, as well as the god of war. The shrine's history dates back to 744 CE when it was originally built as a temple for the imperial family. Over time, it evolved into a Shinto shrine and became one of the oldest Shinto shrines in Japan. The current main hall was rebuilt in 1892 after being destroyed by fire during the Meiji period. Today, Aoi-dan Shrine is a popular tourist destination and an important cultural site in Sendai.

Cultural Significance

Aoi-dan Shrine is closely associated with the mythology of Setsuna-no-Tsukihime, a legendary female spirit who was said to appear on the battlefield before her lover would die. The shrine's main hall is adorned with intricate carvings depicting the mythological scene. The shrine also hosts an annual Setsunatsukihime Matsuri festival in September, which features traditional performances and offerings to honor the legendary spirit.
