About this Shrine

Located on Katsura Island in Lake Biwa, Shitennō-ji Temple is one of Japan's oldest and most important Buddhist temples. The temple was originally built as a memorial hall for the legendary Buddha who descended to Earth from heaven during the Heian period (794-1185). In 1496, the current main hall was constructed during the Muromachi period (1336-1573), and it is still used today for ceremonies and festivals.
