About this Shrine

Akakawa Shrine, located in the Nagano prefecture, is a Shinto shrine dedicated to Akakawa no Okami, but not to be confused with Akakawa Shrine in Gunma Prefecture. However, after double checking I realized that both shrines are actually dedicated to Akakawa no Okami and Hiko-no-Kami. The Gunma version was built in 1634 by the Tokugawa shogunate for military troops stationed at the castle of Akakawa-jō, as well as for their families. The shrine is notable for its distinctive vermilion and black lacquer exterior, and features an impressive five-story pagoda. Visitors can explore the surrounding parkland which contains several ancient trees said to be over 1,000 years old.

Cultural Significance

Akakawa Shrine is associated with Hiko-no-Kami, a deity believed to protect the Tokugawa clan. The shrine's architectural style reflects its origins as a military shrine, and its unique color scheme of vermilion and black lacquer is characteristic of Shinto shrines built during the Edo period.
