About this Shrine

Iwate-dera Old Temple is a temple, not a Shinto shrine, located in the vicinity of the ancient Oshu-Tomine Pass. However, the closely related ancient Shinto shrine, Iwate-jinja, was destroyed by the Mongol invasion of Japan in 1274 and rebuilt. In 1888, the old Iwate-jinja temple site was moved to a new location near the modern Iwate-dera Old Temple. The original Iwate-jinja is believed to have been dedicated to Kotohira-gokami, the god of industry and prosperity. Today, the shrine is enshrined with various regional kami including those associated with agriculture and the sea.

Cultural Significance

While Iwate-jinja was destroyed, its legacy lives on in the modern day shrine. The shrine's architecture reflects traditional Miyagi prefecture designs, including an iconic torii gate and a main hall featuring a haiden ( outer shrine) dedicated to Kotohira-gokami.
