Hyōsube (兵主部)

Name Meaning

Overview

Hyōsube (兵主部) is a lesser-known yet feared yokai resembling a hairy kappa. It is the best-documented hairy kappa variant: it sneaks into homes and bathe without invitation, leaving behind a curse if mistreated. In regional lore it is also linked to stealing crops, challenging humans to sumo (like the classic kappa), and smelling of fish.

Origin

  • Originates from southern Kyūshū and western Japan; some traditions also place it in Tohoku.
  • Often associated with strange illness or misfortune that follows unexplained bathwater disturbances.
  • Sometimes worshipped or offered cucumber offerings (as with kappa) in hopes of avoiding its wrath.
  • Part of the broader hairy kappa family that includes regional names like hairy kappa (毛河童) and Garappa in Kagoshima.

Appearance

  • Short, hunched body covered in wild, sticky hair.
  • Large, round eyes and webbed hands and feet.
  • Sometimes leaves trails of water or tufts of hair behind.

Symbolism

  • Represents the importance of hospitality and respect for spirits.
  • Embodies unpredictable intrusions from the spiritual world.
  • A reminder to treat even the strange and unpleasant with care.
